Portrait of winemaker Jan Wongse Raumland

Born in Germany in 1996 to Thai and German parents, Jan Wongse Raumland grew up among the vineyards of Siefersheim in Rheinhessen from the age of six. He entered wine through gastronomy, becoming a sommelier before beginning an apprenticeship at Emrich-Schönleber in the Nahe in 2016. There he met Felix Keller of the Klaus Peter Keller winery in 2017; from 2018 to 2020, the two attended oenology school while Jan continued his training at the Keller winery.

During an internship in South Africa's Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Jan met Katharina Raumland of the renowned sparkling-wine family. They returned to Rheinhessen, where he joined the Raumland family business and established his own project, releasing his first wines in 2020. WongAmat takes its name from his Thai family, Wongse Amatyakul, known for craftsmanship and a long tradition of charitable work. Introduced for his white wines with the 2024 vintage, WongSiri honors the women in his family who carry “Siri” in their names - the “body and heart of the family.”

Jan works according to 100% organic principles, drawing on agroforestry, regenerative agriculture and selected biodynamic ideas. There is no fixed recipe: each vintage, site and vine is observed on its own terms. Long-term soil and vine health, natural biodiversity, home-made compost and thoughtful canopy management all serve his aim of growing calm, harmonious fruit without synthetic fertilizers.

The same combination of intuition and logic guides the cellar, with uncompromising attention from harvest through barrels, corks and bottling. WongAmat is devoted exclusively to fine, fruity and delicate red wines; WongSiri gives a home to singular white wines born from curiosity and the joy of winemaking. Production remains tiny, and the wines have earned places in Michelin-starred restaurants and cellars around the world.
